Myofascial Cupping

What is myofascial cupping?

Myofascial cupping is a treatment technique that uses cups applied to the skin to create suction, or negative pressure, over selected areas of skin and soft tissue.

Unlike hands-on techniques that apply pressure into the tissues, cupping gently draws the skin and superficial soft tissues into the cup.

At Gisborne Osteopathy, myofascial cupping may be incorporated as an adjunct to a broader osteopathic treatment and management plan where clinically appropriate.

How may Cupping be applied?

Fixed Cupping

Cups are applied to selected areas and remain in place for a short period of time.

The location, level of suction and duration of application will depend on your assessment and the treatment approach selected by your practitioner.

Mobile Cupping

A lubricant may be applied to the skin before a cup is placed and moved over a selected area while maintaining suction.

Your practitioner will adjust the technique according to the area being treated and your response.

How may Myofascial Cupping be used?

Your osteopath may consider myofascial cupping for selected areas of soft tissue that are relevant to your presentation and clinical findings.

Where used, cupping is generally incorporated as one component of a broader management plan rather than as a standalone treatment.

This may include other hands-on treatment approaches, movement or exercise advice and self-management strategies depending on your individual needs.

What should I expect during Cupping?

Your osteopath will explain the proposed technique and discuss whether myofascial cupping is appropriate for your presentation before treatment.

When suction is applied, you may notice a pulling or tight sensation in the area beneath the cup. The intensity of the suction can be adjusted according to the treatment approach and your response.

Depending on the technique selected, cups may remain in one position for a period of time or may be moved over the skin.

Temporary circular marks or skin discolouration can occur following cupping. The appearance and intensity of these marks may vary depending on the level of suction, duration of application and individual skin response.

Cupping marks

Temporary marks may remain visible after treatment. Your practitioner will discuss what to expect before cupping is performed.

What should I know before treatment?

Before treatment, please let your osteopath know about any relevant medical conditions, medications, pregnancy, skin concerns or previous reactions to cupping.

Your practitioner will assess whether cupping is appropriate for you and discuss the proposed treatment, relevant risks and alternative management options before proceeding.
